                      Event Recap

  The second event of 2009 was held at Infineon Raceway, in Sonoma Ca.  We were off to a great start, qualifying 4^th, with a quarter mile elapsed time of 7.63@ 176 mph.  The fans were glad to have us back out there as well as the participants and we put on a great show.  Again we were able to establish ourselves as a strong force in the A Gas class.  We took out some of the best drivers in the north, killing the tree and running the number. No one knew that history would be made on this day, but it was. 

There has never been an all African American final at this track or any other in these parts but as fate would have it the record books would have to be changed.  "Sam Blaylock vs. Mike Henry in the A-Gas final"  was yelled out by the tower.  They had no clue that this was happening either but it was a classic rookie vs. veteran match up.  Both of us did long smokey burnouts that lasted half track and that where the games began.  He knew ahead of time that I wasn't staging first, so I played every starting line trick in the book as did he.  I never had someone beat me at my own game but in fact the old veteran did, from start to finish.  To us it didn't matter who won, just the fact that after all these years we both made it to the finals.  The worst part was that we hurt the engine, but we'll be back soon.
